Canoe Landing Development (Block 31)

This site in the city of Toronto is a multi-use community facility that includes a community centre, a community space, a childcare centre and two elementary schools. The vapour mitigation system covered 2,570 m² (27,700 sq.ft.) of the building to provide an unrestricted sub-slab void. CUPOLEX® eliminated the need for a membrane/liner and provided more efficient venting characteristics with reduced long-term maintenance costs.

Orillia Recreation Facility

The Orillia Recreation Facility, opening fall 2020, will provide amenities including multiple pools, a gymnasium, a fitness centre, and a childcare room. Site concerns for this project included ground and soil contaminated with volatile organic compounds. 6,500 m2 (70,000 sq.ft.) of CUPOLEX® were installed to provide a sub-slab venting medium, preventing VOC migration into the building.

Evergreen Brick Works

The Evergreen Brick Works, located in the Don River Valley of Toronto, was founded in 1889 and was home to one of the country’s largest brick manufacturers for nearly a century. Now, Evergreen has transformed the site into a global showcase for green design that hosts public markets, conferences, private events, and outdoor learning sessions. During renovations, CUPOLEX® was used to form new concrete floors in the existing buildings. CUPOLEX® reduced the amount of heavy granular material required and provided a light-weight flooring alternative. In the historic kiln building, CUPOLEX® provided the void space required for wet floodproofing, allowing stormwater to flow in and out of the building foundation instead of attempting to prevent the building from flooding.

SmartCentres Canada approached Pontarolo Engineering looking for a sustainable soil gas mitigation system to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Environment for this 9,100 m² (100,000 sq.ft.) Walmart store and warehouse in Guelph, ON. CUPOLEX® formed the void space required for the active sub-slab vapour mitigation system. This allow volatile organic compounds from contaminated soils to be ventilated to the atmosphere before accumulating in the building.
