101 Erskine Ave by Tridel

As part of the development of a new condo building at 101 Erskine Ave in Toronto, the adjacent site at 66 Broadway Ave was improved. The development included the removal of surface parking and a pool on top of an existing underground parking garage to be replaced with landscaped areas and a new pool. As a result, a raised slab needed to be built on top of an existing structure, which would not overload it and could also accommodate for its various slopes. A combination of our CUPOLEX-PONTEX® structural slab and CUPOLEX-RIALTO® variable height system was chosen to cover approximately 800 m² (8,600 sq.ft.). The CUPOLEX-PONTEX® structural slab was able transfer loads onto beams supported by the existing parking deck’s pillars without loading the roof deck. Not only did this provide a more efficient structural design, but it reduced the overall dead load versus a gravel fill. To further save concrete, the CUPOLEX-PONTEX® slab followed the sloped nature of the existing slab and maintained the same concrete topping. The CUPOLEX RIALTO® system was then placed on top of this slab and custom cut to achieve a level or, where required, a sloped, finished surface.

The Michelangelo Campus at York Studios is a state-of-the-art film and production studio located in the Bronx, NY that features five stages. The client and their environmental consultants conducted an initial evaluation of mitigation and structural concrete slab options and identified the use of CUPOLEX® as the preferred alternative for the 124,000 sq.ft. (11,500 m²) site. CUPOLEX® fulfilled two functions by providing an aerated floor for vapour intrusion mitigation and a structural ribbed slab capable of spanning grade beams using the CUPOLEX-PONTEX® system.

This trial was a collaboration between Holcim Canada Inc., Dufferin Construction, Pontarolo Engineering Inc., and the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology (CPATT) at the University of Waterloo. The goal was to assess the feasibility of using CUPOLEX® in road and highway applications as a concrete pavement technology. The CUPOLEX® pavements were constructed in Milton, Ontario using a 300 mm (12’’) granular base; a 260 mm (10’’) CUPOLEX® unit; and 150 or 175 mm (6’’ or 7’’) of concrete, depending on the location along the road. The pavement strength was found to be approximately equivalent to a 250 mm (10’’) thick conventional jointed plain concrete pavement. This reduces concrete consumption by approximately 20% which saves clients money.
